FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

This Year's Blue Jean Ball!
"MANNA FoodBank's 9th Annual Blue Jean was once again a huge success for MANNA and her 325 partner agencies throughout the 16 counties of Western North Carolina. Held on June 7th, the community came together to celebrate this wondrous area and hopefully to help make a difference in the lives of many of our neighbors in need. The results of this fundraising effort exceeded last year's total of $103,000. This year's tally comes in at $116,000, which provides enough food for 348,000 meals!"

COMMITTEE POSSIBILITIES for Blue Jean Ball 2008 at MANNA FoodBank

PR and Invitations (Feb-June)

  • Work with staff to create a spiffy invitation/response piece to be mailed in April. Coordinate with theme.
  • "Widen the net" for invitations -- who beyond our current database?
  • Develop publicity plan -- TV, radio, print and other (billboards; bus signs; civic/religious group newsletters)
  • Help to write press releases, take photos and coordinate coverage.

Silent Auction (Feb-June)

  • Round up the prizes [retail shops, travel companies - airline, destination resort/hotels, trips and events (river rafting, nature center, theater, sports events, etc.), food and lodging -- restaurants, B&B's, hotels, and individual gifts]
  • Determine the means -- all silent auction, on-line, some live auction?
  • Arrange display of prizes
  • Coordinate sales (redemption) at the BJB-- timing, logistics

Decoration (Feb-June)

  • Develop the theme visually
  • Plan lighting. (Probably use most of last year's lighting.  Add any new effects that suit the theme.)
  • Plan décor – from wall murals, floor, ceiling --including outside by March?. Set reasonable budget, purchase necessities & solicit in-kind donations in March-May.
  • Plan decoration for walls, floor & ceiling -- outside
  • Work with Entertainment Committee on activities
  • Along with staff, recruit decorators and assign dates and tasks.  Have supplies and equipment on hand.  (People are eager to help and love this part of it, but it is work – much actual decorating is done at the last minute.)

Entertainment Important early (Jan-Feb) plus small amount in April

  • Music and more – Research and arrange bookings. Arrange for "care and feeding" of the artists.
  • We need outside tent for several hours.
  • "Acts" for the dance band breaks – depending upon the theme – dance, cyclists, etc. Could be inside and outside. Recruit youth/children to perform.
  • Roving entertainers – depending upon theme.

Sponsorship/ Ad Journal Now- March

  • Plan the next wave of sponsor solicitation from major employers, law firms, real estate companies, financial institutions and planners, insurance companies, retail stores, etc. remain – both in Buncombe Co. and beyond.  This is our first priority – needs to be done in January!
  • Follow up on letters the staff will send – by phone, visit, email/snailmail.

Food/Beverage Liaison "light duty" now, most in Feb-June

  • We plan to have a food service professional as our food committee chair – with old friends – and new—in food service acting as most of the committee.
  • We need two people to help coordinate those food service folks – and to help with the Ball logistics planning.  (Food service and bar layout, etc.)

We will be looking for people to make signs, paint backdrops, make phone calls, make pickups, etc.  If you know you have a skill or interest, do let us know that.

PLEASE CALL KAREN ETHEREDGE at 299-3663x232 or email ketheredge@secondharvest.org
if you would like to get involved!
Thank you!
