A Great Pumpkin Story

At MANNA FoodBank, we know that times are tough. Many of the the folks showing up at our partner agencies – at food pantries, are experiencing food insecurity for the first time. We’ve sent some writers out to our partner agencies to provide a glimpse into the lives of the people we serve. The following is one of those short stories.

A Great Pumpkin Story

“I never ate a pumpkin before. Other than a pumpkin pie,” he said. I had asked him to talk about some of the items that he received in his box of food each week. “I saw those pumpkins and didn’t have any idea what to do with ‘em. But I took ‘em home and my daughters took one look at ‘em and started cooking.” He told me that there had been a print-out of pumpkin recipes included with the food box. His girls found several recipes that they wanted to test, so he said that week they feasted on pumpkin soup, baked pumpkin and pumpkin bread. “It was nice to have something different to try,” he said. “I wouldn’t have thought that I would like it, but the way those girls cooked it up made it real good.”
