Why we do what we do...

Below is an email from the administrator of a local non profit that serves area youth and helps teach them necessary tools using cooking skills and lessons in nutrition.

The organziation, “Kids at Work,” spent the better part of 3 months every monday and wednesday night learning about these essential skills in Laurel’s Kitchen and even prepared a couple delicious meals for MANNA staff. This is why we do what we do…

Hello Cindy. I hope your holiday was warm and sweet.

One of our student’s (12 yrs old) family couldn’t pay bills this month and had the electricity (and heat) cut off. They are living in a motel scrambling to scrape together enough money to eat at McDonalds. Mom had her hours cut at (a local fast food restaurant) down to 10. The bags of groceries we sent home of fresh fruit, vegetables, and prepared ready-to-eat meals will nourish this family of 3 adults and 2 children throughout this cold weekend. When Chef Ambra and I dropped off our student and the food at the motel, her 6 year old sister came out and hugged us both, without saying a word. Cindy, I can’t thank you and Manna enough for helping to keep this family fed this weekend. We are ALL on the front lines of poverty, whether we know it or not.

With deep respect,
